Why Armadillos Are Destroying Florida Lawns
The holes are not random. Armadillos are following a food source, and until that food source or the animal itself is gone, the digging keeps happening.
They are hunting, not vandalizing
Armadillos have a strong sense of smell and weak eyesight. They dig because they can smell grubs, earthworms, and other insects a few inches under the soil, especially in freshly watered or fertilized Florida lawns. A healthy grub population is basically a dinner bell.
Why it looks so bad, so fast
A single armadillo can dig a dozen or more small, cone-shaped holes in one night while foraging across a yard. They are also nocturnal, so most homeowners never see the animal, only the damage each morning.
What actually stops it
Grub control alone rarely solves an active armadillo problem, it removes future food but does not remove the animal already denning nearby. Trapping the armadillo, combined with reducing the grub population over time, is what stops the yard from getting re-dug the following week.
