Common Snake Species in Northeast Florida
Most snake calls in our service area involve a small handful of species, and knowing which is which changes how urgent the call is.
Non-venomous species we see most
Southern black racers, corn snakes, gray rat snakes, and banded water snakes are the most common non-venomous species around Northeast Florida homes and waterways.
Venomous species to know locally
Of the six venomous species statewide, the cottonmouth (water moccasin) and the dusky pygmy rattlesnake are the two most likely to be encountered around Northeast Florida’s ponds, marshes, and wooded lots. The eastern diamondback rattlesnake also occurs here, though less frequently in developed neighborhoods.
When to call versus when to leave it alone
A snake passing through an open yard is normal and usually best left alone. A snake inside a garage, screened porch, or living space, or one you cannot confidently identify, is a same-day call.
