Can Snakes Climb Walls?
Yes. Several Florida species, including rat snakes and racers, are capable climbers, and that changes where you should be checking for entry points.
How they do it
Snakes climb by pressing their belly scales against rough or textured surfaces and using small irregularities for grip. Brick, stucco, tree bark, and vine-covered walls all give a snake enough surface texture to climb several feet or more.
Where that matters most
Second-story soffits, roof vents, and gable ends are not automatically off-limits to a snake if there is a climbable surface, a downspout, a tree branch, or thick vine growth leading up to them. Entry-point inspections need to include the roofline, not just ground level.
What helps
Trimming tree limbs and vines away from the roofline, keeping gutters and downspouts clear, and sealing gaps around roof penetrations removes most of the climbing routes a snake would use to get up and in.
